Stable internet in any room
A flexible network installation using SMI (small media interface) equipment complements FRÄNKISCHE’s DATALIGHT system. This allows electricians and end users to use the benefits of the plastic optical fibre cable even better in the future for a stable and flexible infrastructure in the home network.
Bandwidths of 1 Gbps allow users to experience the digital world: you stream high-resolution films, load your data from the cloud, make phone calls and control your smart home applications at the same time. In practice, this often poses major challenges for users: because, most of the times, the full bandwidth ends at the wireless router shared by numerous terminal devices in the house.
Providers leave it solely to the customers how the data finally end up at the TV, notebook, etc. They act from necessity and employ repeaters or powerline adapters to enhance signals or transmit data via power lines. Superficially, this might help in some cases, however, the general problem remains: there is no appropriate infrastructure that actually transmits the booked data rate to the individual rooms and thus terminal devices. “This is a great opportunity for electricians: with our DATALIGHT system, you can install a sustainable home network for your customers, with maximum connectivity for all rooms and the guarantee that the full data rate is supplied to the terminal devices,” explains Jan Streibel, FRÄNKISCHE Electrical Systems Product Management.
DATALIGHT: high data rates available anywhere
FRÄNKISCHE has developed two DATALIGHT designs for new residential construction: with active and with passive cabling. Both can be combined at will, and reliably forward data rates of 1 Gbps exactly to the spots where these are actually required.
Passive outlets with standardised SMI plug-in connection, allowing exceptionally easy installation and ensuring high flexibility of application form the basis of the DATALIGHT installation. For this purpose, the electrician inserts one or several optical fibre cables together with 230-volt lines into the electrical conduit. The optical fibre is connected in a concealed manner, and inserted into the SMI socket on the wall, covered with a dust protection cap. Ideally, the lines each run to
Using DATALIGHT connections individually
Via the new DLSMI-PT150 connection cable, users can then connect media converters for terminal devices with an RJ45 connection, or also wireless access points for wireless terminal devices at the passive outlets thus established. “As soon as the specialist has finished the basic installation, end users can use the connections individually,” explains the DATALIGHT expert. This means: when new devices are added, the location of, e.g., the TV changes or a wireless access point shall be integrated into the DATALIGHT system in the future, the users themselves integrate the devices via the desired SMI connection.
The media field in the distribution board is an ideal location for the network centre. This is where internet access takes place with the router, media converter and switches, featuring several optical ports. A patch panel is usually not required, since the fibres are connected directly to the ports of the switch. Unused fibres are simply stored in a cable management system. When a device is connected to a previously unused SMI connection, the respective fibre will be lit red. The user can now connect it to an unused switch port thus activating the data line.
Convenient concealed solution
Passive installation via SMI equipment guarantees a high degree of flexibility; yet the DATALIGHT installation with active components is exceptionally convenient. It is of particular advantage, e.g., for large devices such as a TV set whose location in the flat is clearly defined. The active concealed solution makes use of wireless access points or LAN access points that can be integrated directly into the switch combination. “Thanks to the direct connection to the 230-volt concealed installation, fewer cables are visible on the wall,” Jan Streibel states.
The active DATALIGHT concealed installation is a very convenient solution for the home network. Passive connections with SMI, on the other hand, allow the greatest degree of flexibility and a more affordable yet comprehensive basic installation. When both variants are combined, users can benefit from a perfect infrastructure for maximum connectivity, from the full data rate, as well as stable internet at any desirable location in their homes.
